Splendid Piece

Elizabeth Griffin Hill will discuss her book, A Splendid Piece of Work, covering more than a century of community service by Arkansas Home Demonstration Clubs, in the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies' monthly Legacies and Lunch talk, noon Wednesday in the Darragh Center, Central Arkansas Library System's Main Library, 100 Rock St., Little Rock. Copies of the book will be available for sale and Hill will sign them after her talk. Admission is free. The series sponsors include the Arkansas Humanities Council. Take a sack lunch; the Butler Center will provide drinks and dessert.

Excerpts from A Splendid Piece of Work will also be part of an exhibition titled "Arkansas Homemakers," which opens with a reception, 5-8 p.m. July 11 at Butler Center Galleries, 401 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock, part of Second Friday Art Night. The exhibition, up through Sept. 27, will also include photographs of the home demonstration clubs' history from the Arkansas History Commission and paintings by Katherine Strause.

Copper 'Flame-In'

Skip Mathews, a flame painter (heating copper into shapes and patterns) and a resident master craftsman at the Ozark Folk Center State Park, and his wife, Rachael, are heading up a gathering of copper flame painters in a "Great American Flame-In" through Wednesday at the park, 1032 Park Ave., Mountain View. Visitors can attend the CopperColorist workshop, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. today and Wednesday in the Craft Village. Admission is $12, $7 for children 6-12, free for children under 6.
