U.S. adds 288,000 jobs in June; rate falls to 6.1%

WASHINGTON — Hiring over the past five months has been the strongest since the late 1990s tech boom as the economy added 288,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent from 6.3 percent.

The Labor Department says those gains follow additions of 217,000 jobs in May and 304,000 in April, figures that were both revised upward.

The economy has added more than 200,000 jobs in each of the past five months, a streak it last matched during the 1999-2000 tech boom. It's a sign that the sluggish half-decade recovery from the Great Recession is finally building momentum.

Monthly job gains so far this year have averaged 230,833, up from 194,250 in 2013.

The unemployment rate dipped last month to its lowest level since September 2008.

Interesting numbers, considering that the economy as a whole has shrunk nearly 3% in the most recent numbers.

I also find it interesting- do a bit of research into the past couple of decades- at the expected/forecast job creation vs actual jobs stated.

Notice how the last several years, this time of year the forecast continues to decline. It's easy to "beat" a target if you keep moving it closer to you...

And the way the unemployment numbers are cooked makes the figure absolutely meaningless. I personally know a lot of folks who are jobless and have been so long. They are no longer counted in the statistics. Some who just have been unable to find work - they ran out of unemployment benefits. Others who have simply given up. All who sincerely desire to work. No jobs.

So what are you implying? Should we not try to track the unemployment numbers? I'm not saying it's not a flawed system, but what are you trying to say? I also know people who have found jobs. Including me.
This is good news by the way.

Yeah, that must be it. Incidentally, the print version of this in the ADG stated that the jobs were mostly part time - which always happens in the summer anyway - and not a positive indicator that some think it is.

It must be a good report, because Boehner and McConnell didn't totter out of a K Street bar and put the worst possible spin on it.
