Investigator involved in Pine Bluff shooting identified

The Jefferson County sheriff's office on Wednesday released the name of an investigator who shot a man outside a Pine Bluff bar early Saturday morning.

Major Lafayette Woods said in a statement that Investigator Randy Jackson, an eight-year veteran of the agency, was placed on paid leave after the shooting at Swann's Bar & Grill, 3003 W. Pullen St. He is expected to remain on leave at least until an internal investigation is completed.

Authorities have said 36-year-old Dedric Jones was shot once in the chest outside the business about 3:30 a.m. But full details on how the shooting unfolded remained unclear Wednesday.

Woods was said to be in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff.

Woods said the sheriff's office would not discuss details of what happened until the ongoing internal investigation is finished.

“While this incident, as depicted by some because of speculation and/or their lack of knowledge of the incident certainly raises questions about the response of our investigator, it would be premature to draw any conclusions prior to the completion of an internal investigation," he said in the written statement.

A criminal investigation has already concluded, Woods said. That case file was forwarded to the prosecutor's office for review of possible charges.

A message left with that office wasn't immediately returned Wednesday afternoon.
