Alcohol sales measure moves closer to ballot

LITTLE ROCK — A proposal to allow alcohol sales in all Arkansas counties has moved closer toward appearing on the ballot, after election officials said petitions for the measure passed an initial signature count.

The secretary of state's office Wednesday said more than 84,000 signatures had been counted on petitions to put the proposal on the November ballot. That's more than the 78,133 needed to qualify. The office is now checking to make sure the signatures are from registered voters.

Clearing the initial count means supporters of the measure can have 30 more days to gather additional signatures if they fall short during the verification stage.

The proposal would legalize alcohol sales in all 75 Arkansas counties. Alcohol sales are currently illegal in 37 counties.

Just love it when the voters of the entire state are given the power to overrule the will of voters in an individual county.
