FORDYCE -- Today marks the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of this city. It was incorporated on July 14, 1884, according to records found in the county clerk's office. At that time a petition signed by 50 taxpayers was presented to the County Court asking for authority to make it an independent town, which was granted. Attorney George Gray represented the petitioners and Thomas Peterson was judge of the County and Probate Court.

• North Little Rock Mayor W. F. Laman Tuesday accepted a jet trainer from Little Rock Air Force Base for display in Burns Park. The combat version of the trainer, a T-33, is the F-80, the first American jet plane used in combat during the Korean War. Col. Robert Nowell, commander of the 825th Combat Support Group at the base, presented the plane to Laman. Laman said he would have the parks commission prepare a place in Burns Park for the plane to be displayed. The park will be ready for the plane by the middle of next week, he said. The T-33 is now out of use. It has been altered so that it can never be flown again.

• Gov. Bill Clinton on Friday proposed a law against flag-burning, saying it could defuse the emotional issue without restricting the First Amendment's's protection of free speech. He said his proposal would prohibit destruction of a U.S. flag other than for purposes of disposal of a worn flag. He said the proposed law would constitute a generic ban on flag-burning that would separate the action from the issue of freedom of speech. Under the proposal, he said, any speech or political protest made in conjunction with a flag-burning could not be used to convict the person who burned the flag.

• The Our House homeless shelter will likely break ground this fall for a new building and move away from downtown Little Rock, the president of the shelter's board said. The nonprofit has raised half of the $1.4 million needed for a new building, said Barry McDaniel, president of the Our House board. McDaniel said he expects to break ground for a new building in October and move out of 408 S. Main St. next year. "Our goal has never been to stay downtown," McDaniel said. "We didn't feel that being downtown has benefited the community or our clients."
