• An era ended today at the Little Rock Air Force Base when the base's last B47 left to be put in storage at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. The big jet's take-off was its 127th consecutive on-time departure, unusual for a plane 10 years old. The jet, now obsolete in terms of modern aircraft, will be replaced by the newer B58 Hustlers. A base spokesman said that the B58 fighters, along with the Titan II weapons which the base controls, will make the LRAFB "the most modern sophisticated aircraft and weapons system in the United States Air Force."

• North Little Rock has an identity crisis and a name change may just be the solution, Mayor Patrick Henry Hays says. "We certainly have a lot of history with North Little Rock," Hays said Saturday. But the identity of the city is "somewhat clouded by being a direction of our good neighbor to the south," he added. North Little Rock has had its current name since 1917. Hays, who first brought up the name change during a radio talk show, said the city operates independently of Little Rock and needs a name that reflects that.

• A coalition of Little Rock shelter operators and service providers threw a wrench into a city plan to close more than two dozen homeless camps in August by deciding Friday not to participate in the sweep. An hour after city officials announced that they will begin shutting down 27 homeless camps in early August, Central Arkansas Team Care for the Homeless voted to withdraw from the plan. "The plan that was proposed to us, the timeline is too confining," said Jim Woodell, executive director of River City Ministry in North Little Rock. "We can clean up the camps and run these guys out of town, but where are they going to go? How is this going to help?" The residents of the first set of camps targeted would be notified on Aug. 2 that they have five days to gather their belongings and move on.
