Algae bloom shuts Nimrod Lake sites

The Army Corps of Engineers' Nimrod Project Office has closed all swim beaches on Nimrod Lake in Yell and Perry counties until further notice because of a blue-green algae bloom.

Corps officials said in a Friday news release that boating and fishing are allowed but urges visitors to avoid the algae. Some types of blue-green algae produce natural toxins or poisons, the release said.

The Corps has posted signs to alert visitors that swimming is not allowed until the algae bloom has dissipated or tests confirm that it is safe. In coordination with the Arkansas Department of Health, the Corps is also testing for elevated E. coli levels.

Children and animals are the most susceptible to illness and skin irritations when exposed to toxic algae, the release said.
