The last movie star

Tom Cruise, for all his peccadilloes, represents one of our last links to the Old Hollywood tradition.

Basically, Cruise elevates — or at least adds ballast to — every project he undertakes. And while he’s an easy target for all sorts of jokes, his track record isn’t as bad as some of his detractors would have us believe.

So while the alien invasion/time travel flick Edge of Tomorrow sounds a lot like a high-concept Groundhog Day-meets-Independence Day special-effects extravaganza, Cruise’s attachment to it is at least interesting. How interesting? Well, our Piers Marchant considers the question in this week’s MovieStyle.

Also opening this week is The Fault in Our Stars, a weepy romantic comedy about cancer and teenagers. (What could go wrong?) Dan Lybarger reviews it.

Meanwhile, MovieStyle editor Philip Martin shares his thoughts on the re-opening of the Riverdale 10 by arthouse mogul Matt Smith, whose Market Street Cinema operation is moving in the multiplex.
