FORT SMITH -- Because, it is alleged, they bet on a horseshoe pitching contest, eight of the leading citizens of Shibley, Crawford county, were indicted by the Crawford county Grand Jury for gambling at Van Buren today. The citizens might have gotten by with their nefarious betting had they not become so keenly interested over the horseshoe pitching and the wagers hanging on the result that they became engaged in a free-for-all fight. This led to arrests and the trials of three of the men.

• Arkansas got a break from 100-degree temperatures today, but showers which accompanied a cool front into the state Tuesday were disappointingly small. The forecast called for showers over the state, but only the southern one-third got rain of any consequence and farmers in most areas were left crying for moisture. The mercury hit 100 degrees in Little Rock Tuesday before the cool front arrived to turn today's weather pleasant. The 100-degree reading was a record, topping by 2 degrees the mark of 98 set in 1960. The state also had a record low reading at Fort Smith -- 55 degrees.

• After seven months of squawking, the chicken war between Tyson Foods Inc. and ConAgra Inc. ended Friday, with Tyson holding the big end of the wishbone. The Holly Farms Corp. board approved Tyson Foods' last tender offer of $70 per share in cash, supporting a $1.29 billion Holly Farms sale to Springdale's Tyson Foods. "It's a done deal," James Blair, Tyson Foods' general counsel, said of the board's decision. "We've extended our $70-per-share offer until July 18. If the majority of Holly Farms shares are tendered, we will pay on that date." The board also agreed to a $70 million settlement with ConAgra Inc.

NEW YORK -- He's no Harry Potter, but Bill Clinton is still a record breaker. Clinton's My Life sold more than 400,000 copies in the United States on its first day of release, the most ever for a nonfiction book and double the believed previous record holder, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's Living History. Bill Clinton's publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, announced an additional printing of 725,000 copies, bringing the total to 2.25 million. More printings are likely.
