97's, Spiller set for Stickyz; Reel Big Fish, T's at Juanita's

The Old 97's will perform Friday night at Stickyz Rock 'n' Roll Chicken Shack.

Formed in Dallas in 1993 by lead singer Rhett Miller, bassist Murry Hammond, lead guitarist Ken Bethea and drummer Philip Peeples, the band is promoting its latest album, Most Messed Up, released April 29 by According To Our Records. Amazon.com's listing of the new album notes that 5 of the 12 songs carry the "explicit" warning.

The group has released 10 albums that have earned the band comparisons with Whiskeytown, Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, The Jayhawks, The Bottle Rockets and Drive-By Truckers.

Miller, who has also released four solo albums, performed an acoustic solo show April 24 at South on Main as part of the Arkansas Literary Festival.

The show will open at 9 p.m. with a set by Madison King.

Tickets are $18 in advance or $22 at the door.

The Lucious Spiller Band will perform Saturday night.

Admission is $5.

The Locust Honey String Band will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $5.

The Locust Honey String Band is an old-timey bluegrass, country blues trio of women who are from Boston, Brooklyn and north Georgia.

Reel Big Fish will perform at 8:30 p.m. today at Juanita's. Reel Big Fish is a noted ska band, formed in Southern California in 1991 by lead singer Aaron Barrett, the only remaining original member.

Survay Says! will open the show.

Admission is $18.

Saturday, the club will host the Plain White T's at 10 p.m. Formed in the Chicago suburbs in 1997, the group had a No. 1 hit, "Hey There Delilah," in 2007.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Sunday, the club will present Twin Forks.

Seryn will open the show at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 the day of the show.

Saturday night, the White Water Tavern will present Oklahoma singer-songwriter John Moreland.

Moreland has opened shows for Jason Isbell and Lucero, and has been praised by MSNBC commentator Rachel Maddow, who said of him: "If the American music business made any sense, guys like John Moreland would be household names."

Opening the show are Kierston White and Arliss Nancy.

White, like Moreland, is based in Norman, Okla., and Arliss Nancy is a band from Fort Collins, Colo.

Admission to the 9:30 p.m. show is $7.

Friday, the Rev Room is hosting "Burlesque Rocks," featuring the Hot Springs-based Foul Play Cabaret.

Opening the show will be Jessica Carder, and an "after party" will feature Brother Andy & His Big Damn Mouth.

Tickets are $10-$15.

Saturday, the club will host Vanapalooza, a benefit project for The Van, which takes aid to homeless camps in central Arkansas.

The show will start at 9 p.m. and will feature Knox Hamilton, Siversa, The Federalis, Thin Margins and The Whole Fam Damily.

Maxine's in Hot Springs will present three acts tonight: Brother Andy and His Big Damn Mouth, Christian Lee Hutson and Rachel Kate.

Kate is a soul folk singer from Charleston, S.C., now based in Nashville, Tenn., and Hutson is a California folk rocker, formerly a member of the Driftwood Singers, and now pursuing a solo career.

Admission is $5 for the 9 p.m. show.

Friday, the club will host Mya's Madams, a drag show, at 9 p.m. Cover charge is $7.

Saturday, legendary punk rock band Black Flag will headline a show that will also include Greg Ginn and The Royal We and Cinema Cinema. Ginn is also the guitarist and sole remaining original member of Black Flag. The band's lead singer, Mike Vallely, took over the job as the latest replacement for the band's best known former member, front man Henry Rollins. The group broke up in 1986, re-formed briefly at times, and then got together again in 2013.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $22 at the door.
