Accidents on state's roadways fatal to 2

Two people died in separate vehicle accidents on Arkansas roadways Wednesday.

A Bee Branch man was killed in an accident on Arkansas 65 in Clinton, according to a report from the Arkansas State Police.

Jimmy D. Newell, 72, made a left turn out of Simmons Bank onto Arkansas 65 around 11:28 a.m. Wednesday, according to the report. Newell's vehicle, a 2006 Ford F-150, was struck on the driver's side door by a 2002 Peterbilt that was traveling north on the highway, the report states.

Newell was pronounced dead at the scene by the Van Buren County coroner.

His passenger, 10-year-old Katilyn Newell, was injured in the accident. She was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital, where she was in fair condition Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the Peterbilt truck, Michael Jay Gilley, 54, was also injured. He was taken to Ozark Health Medical Center. His condition was unknown late Thursday.

A Texas man died Wednesday after the car he was riding in crashed into a truck stopped in traffic on Interstate 40 in St. Francis County, according to a report from the state police.

About 3:35 p.m., Anna M. Bryan, 82, of Whitney, Texas, was driving east on I-40 in a 2008 Ford Focus, according to the report.

Bryan's vehicle failed to stop and hit a 2014 Freightliner that was stopped in traffic congestion near the Palestine exit, the report states.

Bryan was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, where she was treated and released.

Bryan's passenger, Dale E. Bryan, 83, of Whitney, Texas, died at the scene.

The driver of the Freightliner -- Dawn Perez, 50, of Goose Creek, S.C. -- was not injured.
