Where I live: I live in the historic downtown area known as the Governor’s Mansion District. I share the home with my wife, Joy, and a boxer named Bella. Joy and I were attracted to this area because of its diversity and the uniqueness of the houses. And it has a real feeling of community.

Occupation: I am a certified financial planner with Matlock & Associates.

My favorite space: Our parlor.

Why? This room has served many uses. When we first moved into our home 11 years ago, we used this room as our master bedroom because of the space, lighting and fireplace (though nonworking). It was a very cozy space. After a renovation and addition to the house some years later, we converted the space back to its original use as a parlor. This room has great natural light, including a pocket window that is capable of being raised from floor to ceiling to allow access to the front porch. This room is my reading room and is also the room where Joy meditates. This is the room in which we place our Christmas tree. We love to entertain during the holidays.

If I could make one change to improve this space I would: convert the fireplace to a working gas fireplace. I think the ambience of a real fire during the fall and winter months would make this room feel even better.
