Elections cement control in Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia - Serbia’s state electoral commission has confirmed a landslide victory by the ruling center-right party in parliamentary elections. It was the most decisive win since the multiparty system was introduced in the country in the early 1990s.

The commission said Monday that the Serbian Progressive Party, former ultranationalists, won an absolute majority Sunday, with 158 seats in the 250-member parliament. The victory gives the Progressives more leeway to overhaul Serbia’s struggling economy and push for membership in the European Union.

The Socialist Party of Serbia, founded by late autocratic leader Slobodan Milosevic, came in second with 44 seats. The Democratic Party won 19 seats, and the New Democratic Party of former President Boris Tadic has 18 seats.
