Some House speaker candidates want race delayed

By The Associated Press

This article was published March 18, 2014 at 1:48 p.m.

Some candidates running for Arkansas' House speaker say they'd like to see the speaker's race pushed back until they know who'll win the chamber's majority in the November election.

The vote is now set for Wednesday when the Legislature meets to formally adjourn the fiscal session. Those who support a delayed vote point to the 2012 speaker's race, when Democratic state Rep. Darrin Williams of Little Rock was elected speaker but wasn't confirmed after Republicans won a majority in the House in the November election.

This year, three Republicans and one Democrat are running for House speaker.

Democratic state Rep. Fred Love of Little Rock said he'd wants the election pushed back, as well as Republican state Rep. Matthew Shepherd. Republican state Reps. Jeremy Gillam, R-El Dorado, and Kim Hammer, R-Benton, say they don't want the election delayed.
