JOSHUA ANTHONY BROWN, 25, of Little Rock, passed away March 26, 2014. He was born in Ocala, Fla., to Walter and Lorna Wiles Brown and was a student at UALR. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his parents; sisters and brothers, Geraldine Bryant (Rodney) of Lancaster, Pa., Jonathan Brown, Giovanni Brown (Angela) and Josef Brown, all of Oklahoma City, Jewell Alexander (Shane) of Wichita Falls, Texas, Jade Brown of Baltimore, Md., Jasmine Brown of Fulton, Mo., Joash Brown of Camp Pendleton, Calif., Leighanne Brown, Kristopher Brown and Tyler Brown, all of Little Rock; and nephews, Jacob Nelson, Robert Alexander, Kingston Alexander and Gage Alexander, all of Wichita Falls; grandmother, Edna Wiles of Kingston, Jamaica; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held on Friday, April 4 at 10 a.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 8700 N. Rodney Parham, officiated by Pastors Steve Orian and Don Fortner. •–––––ALBENA “BEANIE” EDEN, 92, of North Little Rock, passed away March 28, 2014, at St. Vincent Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Known to all as Beanie, she was born Albena Serafina Pechoski on Oct. 4, 1921, in North Little Rock, Ark., one of five children. She was a homemaker and member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing and loved polka dancing. For the past 4 and a half years, she has been a resident of Fox Ridge Assisted Living in NLR. In 1941, she married the love of her life, Percy “Joe” Eden and raised three sons. Beanie was predeceased by her parents, Valentine and Stella Gubanski Pechoski; her two brothers, Edward “Sonny” Pechoski in 1983 and Sylvester Pechoski in 1987; her husband, Joe Eden in 1994; and her great-grandson, Matthew Ryan Johnson in 1999.

She is survived by her three sons, Richard (Brenda) Eden and Michael (Lori) Eden of North Little Rock, and John (Kelly) Eden of Arvada, Colo.; and her two sisters, Margaret Copeland and Angie Dollar of North Little Rock. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Kim Eden of Sherwood; Chris and Steve Eden of North Little Rock, Melissa Johnson of Aurora, Colo., Kryssy Kimminau of Castle Rock, Colo., and Nick and Zach Eden of Arvada, Colo.; and 11 great-grandchildren, Joey, Emily, Abby, and Jake Ellis of Sherwood, Derek, Olivia, and Caitlyn Johnson of Aurora, Colo., and Summer, Hope, Noah, and Lucy Kimminau of Castle Rock, Colo.; along with many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to send a special thanks to the staff at Fox Ridge Assisted Living and Arkansas Hospice for the loving care and attention to our Mom. Also, a special thanks to Patricia McKinley and Joy Richardson for their spiritual care and companionship to our mother during her stay at Fox Ridge.

A visitation will be from 5-6 p.m., Sunday, March 30, followed by a rosary service at 6 p.m. at North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., in North Little Rockand a Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 31 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 6150 Camp Robinson Rd., in North Little Rock. •–––––MARIA LOURDEZ GARCIA, 39, of Little Rock, passed away March 27, 2014. She is survived by her husband, Roy Garcia; daughters, Jacqueline Garcia and Sasi Garcia; son, Freddy Garcia; mother, Florinda Rojas, all of Little Rock; six brothers; and two sisters.

•–––––PETER DARRELL HOELZEL, 84, of North Little Rock, born Jan. 1, 1930, passed away March 28, 2014. He is a Vietnam Vet who proudly served in the United States Air Force for 22 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Hoelzel; parents, Albert and Lydia Hoelzel; sister, Bertha Hoelzel Kutz.

Peter is survived by his children, Jacqueline Margaret Hoelzel, Richard Darrell Anaya-Hoelzel (son-inlaw, Gregg Hoelzel-Anaya), and Helen (Alan) Pacey; grandchildren, Loren (Jane) Pacey, Kate Elizabeth (Nick) Thorpe; and one great-grandson, Lucas Thorpe; siblings, Patricia Beane of Delevan, Wis., and Joseph Hoelzel of Port Republic, Va.

•–––––ROWAN BARNEY “R.T.” KEATHLEY, age 90 of Sherwood, passed away March 28, 2014 in Little Rock, He was born Feb. 22, 1924 in Des Arc; he was the son of Curby and Cecil Keathley.

Rowan was a parts manager for many years at Macks Trucks, Robinson Int. and Studebaker. He was a member of Life Tabernacle, where he played the guitar for many years. He was an avid fisherman and won many awards. He enjoyed nature, bird-watching, working with flowers and built many birdhouses for friends and relatives. He loved riding his golf cart and Kubota.

He married Betty Nally in 1944. She preceded him death in February 1997. He married Dorothy Heslep March 28, 1998.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Loyd Keathley; one sister, Mary Alford; and one grandson.

He is survived by five children, Vivian Higgs of Sherwood, Harry (Betty) Keathley of Little Rock, Lynn (Joe) Soley of Holt, Fla., Thomas Keathley also of Holt and Pat Jones of Sherwood. He had nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his wife Dorothy, his children, family, many friends and church members.

The family would like to thank Dr. Brain Sheppherd for his care of Rowan at the time of need and his concern afterwards. The family also wants to thank Dr. St. Pierre for his kindness and expertise and the wonderful compassionate care Rowan received at Arkansas Hospice during his short time there.

•–––––BETTY JO HARDIN PAGAN, 92, distinguished educator and children’s advocate, died March 25, 2014, in Little Rock. A former president of the Southern Association on Children Under Six (SACUS) (now called the Southern Early Childhood Association), Mrs. Pagan played a leading role in the advancement of kindergartens and nursery schools in Arkansas and throughout the region.

Mrs. Pagan was born on May 31, 1921, in Faulkner County, Ark. She was the daughter of Marley Alfred Hardin, a farmer, and Susan Muriel Raney Hardin, a homemaker and former teacher. Mrs. Pagan graduated from Redfield High School in 1940 and enrolled at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She left the university in 1942 to participate in the nation’s war effort by working at the Pine Bluff Arsenal, where her unit won the Army-Navy “E” Award for Excellence in War Production.

In June 1943, she married John Frank Pagan of Strong, who was serving in the U.S. Army Air Force. When World War II ended, the Pagans returned to Arkansas and became teachers. Mrs. Pagan finished her Bachelor of Science in home economics degree at Fayetteville and later earned her Master of Science in child development and family relations, as well as her advanced study diploma, at the university.

Mrs. Pagan began her teaching career in Greene County in 1946. The next year, she and her husband moved to Little Rock. She taught at Joe T. Robinson Elementary School in 1947 and at Fuller High School from 1948 to 1951. During the 1950s, Mrs. Pagan balanced career and motherhood, teaching at Little Rock Central High, Pulaski Heights Junior High and the Jeanne Anthony Academy, as well as giving birth to three sons.

In 1962, Mrs. Pagan originated Hall High School’s innovative kindergarten laboratory program, which she directed until 1969. She taught child development courses at the State College of Arkansas (now UCA) from 1969 to 1971; supervised the Little Rock School District’s home economics and kindergarten programs from 1972 to 1979; and served as the district’s director of educational services from 1979 to 1983.

Mrs. Pagan published numerous articles, position papers and curriculum guides, and she received extensive recognition for her contributions to early childhood education. She was a member of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture and home economics, and Alpha Delta Kappa, an international group of women educators dedicated to excellence. She served as president of the Pulaski County Pre-School Association and the Arkansas Association on Children Under Six (AACUS), in addition to heading SACUS, the regional early childhood organization with over 7,000 members in 13 states. Both AACUS and SACUS gave Mrs. Pagan their outstanding member awards. She was a delegate to two White House Conferences on Children and Youth.

Mrs. Pagan had an exceptionally active retirement. She volunteered at the Shepherd Center, participated in the nursery school and altar guild at Trinity United Methodist Church, and served as a docent at the Arkansas Arts Center’s Decorative Arts Museum. She ran a voter registration drive for the Pulaski County Legal of Women Voters and worked in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Central Arkansas.

A keen horticulturalist and certified master gardener, Mrs. Pagan ran the Arkansas Unit of the Herb Society of America and served on the group’s national board of directors. She belonged to the Central Arkansas Horticultural Society and the Chenal Garden Club.

Mrs. Pagan’s husband of almost 55 years, John Frank Pagan, died in 1998. She is survived by her sons, Dr. John Pagan of Richmond, Va., Dr. Jim Pagan of Little Rock, and Dr. Joe Pagan of Versailles, Ky.; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Pagan; and her grandson, Will Pagan of Versailles.

The family would like to express its gratitude to the staff of Fox Ridge at Chenal retirement community for their compassionate care of Betty and support for her family.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, March 31, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. in Ruebel Funeral Home, followed by graveside service at Mount Holly Cemetery. •–––––CHARLES “CHUCK” R. SIEGISMUND, 84, of North Little Rock passed away in Branson, Mo., on Thursday, March 27, 2014. He was born in Rockville, Mo., on Jan. 1, 1930, to the late Walter Henry and Myrtle Ellen Russell Siegismund. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale Siegismund.

Chuck had a master’s degree in accounting from ASU and UCA, and after retiring from the United States Air Force, he worked for the state of Arkansas. He was also a former member of the Scimitar Shrine Center, No. 216 Jacinto Masonic Lodge and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Jacksonville for many years, where he was a member of the Pairs and Spares Sunday school class. He was a life member of the American Legion VFW and Korean Veteran’s Organization. He married the love of his life, Mona Eubanks, on May 23, 1991. His life centered on his beloved family. Chuck was an avid hunter, loved to travel, enjoyed being a gentleman farmer and had a great sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona “Mona;” and their six children, Richard Siegismund (Carla) Siegismund of Haymarket, Va., Karen Stiles of North Little Rock, Sharon Fisher of Overland Park, Kan., Hope Ritchey Lefler (Steve) of Fort Smith, Amy Ritchey Howell (Jim) of Jonesboro and Julie Ritchey Shanks (Dewey) of Searcy, Ark.; a sister, Charlotte Hirni of Nevada, Mo.; grandchildren, Richie, Cydney and Colby Siegismund, Cameron and Brody Fisher, Eric Anderson (Christy), Christian Lefler, Christopher Howell, Caroline Shanks, Meredith Shanks; great-grandchildren, Leighton and Katherine Anderson; and a host of other family and friends.

ALEXANDER — Edmund Joseph (Ned) Sweeney, affectionately known to many as Mr. No, age 73, passed from this life on Thursday, March 27. He was born on Feb. 26, 1941, in Darke County, Ohio, to the late Edmund John and India Cox Sweeney. Ned was a hard worker who enjoyed spending time in the garden and tending to the yard. He treasured the time he spent with his family.

Survivors are his spouse, Nancy Carolyn Sweeney; children, Jeffrey (Deborah) Sweeney of Lonoke, Michele (Kevin) Hayes of Bryant, and step-daughter, Tamara (Charles) Rummel of Jacksonville. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Brittany Sperry, Joshua Vocque and J. W. Sweeney; three great-grandchildren; in addition to the nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren through marriage that he adored as his own; brother, Michael (Ineke) Sweeney; his mother-in-law, Margaree Weddington; and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him.

The family wishes to thank Micki Hull, Chris and Christy and the rest of the staff at Saline Hospice for their tender care of Ned.

•–––––AUGUSTA — Miriam “Mystrey” (Shults) McCabe, age 95, resident of Augusta, Ark., passed away Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Woodruff County Health Center in McCrory.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2014, followed by the Funeral at 2 p.m. all at the Church of God of Prophecy in Augusta. Bro. Tony Pasley will be the officiating minister and will be assisted by Bro. Walter Hicks. Interment will be in the Augusta Memorial Park with Thompson-Wilson Funeral Directors in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McCabe was born on Feb. 2, 1919, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., the daughter of Daniel and Wealthy Caldonia (Fox) Shults. She attended Tennessee schools and was married on June 16, 1957, to Johnnie McCabe. Mystrey worked for Peebles Grocery in downtown Augusta for nearly 30 years. After putting her job aside to care for her ailing parents, she began to work for her son at the McCrory IGA.

In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family, quilting, gardening, fishing and cooking. Those who knew and loved her will always remember her gift for storytelling. Many hearts were warmed with her kind words and sweet singing. She was a lifelong member of the Church of God Of Prophecy.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Fowler Moore of Mena, Ark.; two sons, James W. Fowler and wife Kathryn of Augusta and Jerry Don McCabe of Higginson; one sister, Martha Laverne Henderson and husband Gene of Russellville; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

•–––––BEEBE — Richard Arthur “Dickie” Snider, 87, of Beebe passed away on March 29, 2014. Dickie was born on June 4, 1926, to Mary and E.J. Snider in their home out on the hay prairie near Carlisle, Ark. He was raised in Carlisle where he graduated from high school in 1945. At a young age, he joined his father in the farming operation and his first job was to move trucks from place to place. He said that his father had a strong hand and an even stronger work ethic. They began farming hay and were able to ship thousands of bales of hay around the country. Together they continued to buy land and clear it when rice became the crop of choice on the prairie. He enjoyed farming, but most of all he enjoyed his mechanical projects, building implements and modifying equipment to make farm work easier. He was a self-trained mechanical engineer. Dickie continued the farming operation until time for retirement, then he and his wife spent the next 20 years living in their motor home and traveling throughout the United States.

In addition to his parents, Dickie was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Bud Young of Carlisle; and a nephew, William A. Young.

He is survived by his wife, Carroll E. Snider, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Jim Armistead of Lavaca; a son Randall Snider, of Carlisle; two step-sons, David Carson and wife, Rhonda, of Hodgenville, Ky., and Steve Carson of Beebe; two grandchildren and five step-grandchildren: Adrienne Gray and her husband, Robin, Jay Snider and his wife Christina, Hunter Gilliam, Becca-Jo Parchman, Danielle Mechicic, Gabrielle Carson, and William Carson; also blessed with two great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren, Reaves, Mary Grace, Breyer, Kylie and Alma Kate.

Loran was the former night Manager for Ed and Kay’s Restaurant in Benton, a US Navy Veteran and a Baptist. Loran was an avid deer hunter and a triple trophy winner in 1995-1996.

Survivors: mother, Kay Diemer, Benton; father and step-mother, Loran Barnes Jr. and Patricia Barnes, Powhatan, Ark.; and several other family and friends.

•–––––BENTON — James H. McHughs, 89, of Benton went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 27, 2014. He attended college at Arkansas State Teachers where he played basketball. James was the Chief of Reservoir Regulations for Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma.

James was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda McHughs, and his brother, Joe T. Smith of North Little Rock.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Ann McHughs of Benton; a son, Bill McHughs and wife Kay of Hot Springs, Ark.; granddaughters, Kelley Ann West of Los Angeles and Ashley Kay Malott and husband Jeff of Springdale, Ark.; along with great-grandchildren, Rachel Saunders, Montana Saunders, Justin Malott, and Mathew Malott.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander with Bro. Jason Tallent officiating.

•–––––BENTON — Nancy Flo Bylander Whitley, 82, of Benton passed away March 28. Nancy Whitley excelled in all areas of life and will be remembered for her compassionate spirit, unfaltering determination, and joyful outlook. She was born June 2, 1931, in Little Rock, Ark. She was preceded in death by her father, Edger G. Bylander; her mother, Faye Dallas; step-father, Lonnie Dallas; and one grandson, Matthew Whitley.

Nancy Whitley is survived by her husband, John Whitley; three sons, Rick Whitley and his wife Sharon from North Little Rock, Randall Whitley and his wife Vicki from Benton, and Mark Whitley from Dana Point, Calif.; two grandsons, Clint Whitley and his wife Elizabeth from Little Rock and Michael Whitley from Beebe; two granddaughters, Jolie Hobbs and her husband Brett from Van Buren, Brennan Whitley from Berkeley, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren.

Nancy Whitley was raised in Little Rock, graduated from Little Rock Senior High, class of 1949, and attended University of Arkansas Fayetteville and Little Rock Junior College. In the summer of 1950 she was Arkansas’s first female host of a radio show “The Nancy Bylander Show, Musical Memories” on KXLR. In 1951 she married her husband John and made their home in California where he was in boot camp. After his tour of duty in Korea they moved back to Benton to open a floor covering business and raise their family. John and Nancy Whitley recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

Nancy Whitley was active in Parkview United Methodist Church where she was volunteer church secretary for 20 years, served on the board, taught Sunday school and was the youth counselor. She was a charter member of the Churches Joint Council on Human Needs and worked on the emergency committee for several years. She also served as chairman of the Office of Volunteer Services and president of the Council of Garden Clubs of Benton. Nancy Whitley was honored with the Community Service Award on KTHV Eye on Arkansas television show for her volunteer activities. For the last several years John and Nancy Whitley were members of First United Methodist Church.

Nancy Whitley was an accomplished athlete in several sports including bowling and golf. She won the club championship several times over the years. She was a gifted artist and spent time painting, wood carving and many other art projects. John and Nancy Whitley enjoyed winters in South Texas.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday March 30 at Ashby Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Pine Crest Memorial Park on Monday 10 a.m. March 31. Honorary pallbearers are the members of First United Methodist Church Dorcas Class and special friend Jessie Ray.

•–––––CABOT — Charles Fredrick Flynt Jr., 91, of Cabot passed away Friday, March 28, 2014. He was born July 5, 1922 in Lonoke to the late Charles Fredrick Flynt Sr. and Annie Taylor Flynt. A United States Navy Veteran, Mr. Flynt served during WWII and Pearl Harbor as a Boatswain Mate First Class on the USS Ramsey, USS Pruett and USS White Marsh. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Mr. Flynt was an avid fiddle player and played with the Hank Thrasher Band for over 15 years and also played in the Kern Kennedy Band. He enjoyed playing for nursing homes and senior centers and was the Grand Marshal of the 2013 Cabot Christmas Parade. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, James Louis Flynt, Richard Milton Flynt, Juanita Brown, Gladys Cates, and Anna Lea McGinley.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Eula Mae Flynt of Cabot; sister, Sue Allen; nephew, Pastor Robbie Flynt and his wife, Sherri and their children Seth Flynt and Kerri Stack all of Little Rock.

•–––––CONWAY — Pamela Kay (Mannis) Skinner, 56, of Conway, Ark. passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014. Pamela was born on Jan. 7, 1958 in Dewitt, Ark. to Harold Mannis and Helen Morris Mannis.

During her childhood and teenage years Pamela participated in gymnastics and she was also a cheerleader. She worked for many years as a retail sales associate. Pamela was of the Baptist faith and at an early age she was baptized while attending Eastside Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Pamela is survived by her mother, Helen Mannis Herald and her step father, Paul R. Herald of Conway, Ark.; one son, Thomas Gabriel Skinner of Maumelle, Ark.; two grandchildren, Paige Skinner and Avery Skinner of Ft. Worth, Texas; two brothers, Harold Dwayne Mannis (Monica Lockwood Mannis) of Hot Springs, Ark., Perry M. Mannis (Karen Pittman Mannis) of Gilmer, Texas; two step-brothers, Kim Herald, and Keith Herald both of Neb.; as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Pamela is preceded in death by her husband, Mitch Skinner; her father, Harold Mannis; and one step-brother, Hunter Herald.

•–––––CONWAY — Charles O. Womack, age 89 of Conway, died Thursday, March 27, 2014 peacefully at home. Born Aug. 27, 1924 in El Paso, Ark., he was the son of the late John and Ophelia Womack, and the oldest of six boys.

During WWII Sergeant Womack served in the Army as a messenger for the 3139th Signal Battalion. His campaigns included the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Offensive), Rhineland and the Central European Campaign. He met his beautiful bride, Eugenia (Jean) Clements, after the war and married in 1947.

Charles was a former longtime resident and merchant of Cabot, Ark.; where he was a member of First Baptist church for over 50 years and was an ordained deacon. He retired from the Cabot Fire Department in 1967.

He worked 26 years at the Little Rock Air Force Base where he retired in 1987 as Commissary Meat Market Manager. Charles loved to spend time with his family and friends. Prior to his declining health, he loved to camp, fish, do carpentry work, grow some of the best tomatoes to be found, cheer on the Razorbacks and the Cowboys, and he loved to attend his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s school and sporting events.

Charles and Jean relocated to Conway in 2003, and transferred their membership to 2nd Baptist Church of Conway.

Charles was a great husband, a loving dad, and a wonderful PawPaw. Most of all he loved Jesus and wanted his family to as well.

Charles is survived by his adoring wife of 67 years, Jean; two sons, Bobby (Janet) Womack of Batesville, Kent (Paulette) Womack of Conway; two daughters, Carol Sue (Eugene) Jones of Cabot, Jan (Barry) Corkern of Little Rock; brothers, Wayne (Margaret) and Johnny (Mildred) Womack; four grandsons, Rob (Stacy) Womack, Richard (Angee) Kennedy, Scott (Heather) Womack, Lawson Corkern; four granddaughters, Angelique Kennedy, Audra (Nathaniel) Keen, Jennifer (Nick) Yarberry, Lauren Boyles; two step-grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Thomas, Dewey and Lyle Womack; and niece, Karen.

•–––––DeWITT — Billie Jean Garris Holzhauer, 81, died March 28, 2014. She was born in Moro, Ark., on Jan. 17, 1933, to Thomas Henry Garris Sr., and Anna Mae Wofford Garris. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Circle. She loved to entertain in her kitchen and spend time gardening.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Bobby, James, and Doyle Garris,; and one sister, Josephine Nichols.

•–––––HAZEN — Max McCarty, resident of Hazen, Ark., passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at the age of 86 years old. Born Dec. 28, 1927 at Woodrow, Ark., he was the son of the late Andy and Nancy Arizona (Everett) Mc-Carty.

Mr. McCarty was a retired carpenter. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the United States Army and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service to our country.

In addition to his parents, Mr. McCarty was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Tapley McCarty; four brothers, Billy, Bobby, Haze, and Arnold McCarty; two sisters, Jessie George and Elva Jennings.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline McCarty of Batesville; brother, Ted McCarty of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Jean Burnett of Greenville, Mo.; daughter, Sharon Vinson of Snyder, Texas; two sons, Larry McCarty and his wife Michelle of Snyder, Texas, and Terry Mc-Carty and his wife, Joie of Hazen, Ark.; five grandchildren, Meghan and Mitchell McCarty of Hazen, Misty Pepper of Louisiana, Jeremy Vinson of Montana, Shawn Vinson of Snyder, Texas; and five great-grandchildren.

•–––––HOT SPRINGS — Sam Reamey Clark Sr., 90, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 24, 2014, at West Shores Retirement Center in Hot Springs, Ark. He was born on May 14, 1923, in Malvern, Ark., to Letty Reamey Clark and Thomas M.D. Clark. He was married for 64 years to the love of his life, the late Lucille Mason Clark. Sam was predeceased by brother, Madison D. Clark; and sisters, Lethe Clark Swaim and Francis Clark Watson; and grandson Matthew Robert Clark of Frisco, Texas.

Sam lived his entire life in the Malvern and Hot Springs area. After his mother passed away, he was raised by his uncle and aunt, Isaac H. and Thelma Clark Roland. He was a graduate of Malvern High School and attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he was initiated into Alpha-Zeta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity Oct. 19, 1946.

Sam was a WWII veteran who enlisted Dec. 9, 1942, in the U.S. Army Air Corps, (10th Air Force), 7th Bomb Group, 493rd Squadron. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant, serving as a nose gunner in a B-24 Liberator, in the Burma-India-China theater. He received two Bronze Stars for heroism and the Victory Air Medal. On Nov. 21, 1945, he was honorably discharged.

His 40-year career in the construction materials business began in 1948 with Roland Ready Mix. In 1950, he began serving as general manager for Malvern Gravel Company. In 1966, Sam established Mid State Construction and began building interstate highways, bridges and various other construction projects throughout south Arkansas.

Sam was a former director of Bank of Malvern and served for 11 years on the Malvern School Board holding offices such as president and secretary. He was also a past board member of the Arkansas General Contractors.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hot Springs and was instrumental in starting The Caring Place, 101 Quapaw Ave. in Hot Springs.

Sam and his wife, Lucille, were donors to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, establishing a pediatric eye wing.

Loving survivors are children, Jan (Greg) Schmitz of Frisco, Texas, Sam Reamey Clark Jr. of Hot Springs, John Mark (Sandra) Clark of Frisco, Texas, and Philip Roland Clark of Keller, Texas; sister-in-law, Claudia Mann Mason (99); and grandchildren, Sam Clark III, John Wesley Clark, Sarah B. Clark, Byron Mason Clark and Philip Brady Clark; and special lifelong friend, Melba Yates.

He will greatly be missed by his family and friends, but his memory will live on if we use his life as a roadmap to make the world a better and more humane place.

The family wishes to express its love and deep appreciation to his loyal and dedicated caregivers for the past two years, James Johnson (JJ), Ken Wachtendorf and Kevin Ross, who were so caring and compassionate in his final days. He was the son of Andrew and Jo Vestal McKinney Lockwood, born on Nov. 26, 1928, in Graysonia, Ark. He was a retired national product sales manager of Martin Marietta Materials, and was very active in the United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jean Morrow Lockwood. He is survived by his daughter and sonin-law Susan and Rick Newhauser of Miami, Fla., and their sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Esther, Stephen and Nicole, and Jason; his son and daughter-inlaw David and Dani Lockwood of Kenosha, Wis., and their sons, Pete and Brian; and his son and daughter-in-law Robert and Rose Lockwood of Libertyville, Ill.; his four great-grandchildren, Oliver, Carter, Ava and Reese Newhauser; his brother and sister-in-law, James and Martha Lockwood of Hot Springs, Ark., and their sons and daughtersin-law, Blake, Joey and her husband, Joe, Jason and his wife, Traci, Mitchell and his wife, Kerri; and numerous grandnephews and nieces.
