Infant raises death toll to 16 in Arkansas tornado

An infant girl born to a mother injured in last week's tornado died shortly after being born, raising the tornado's statewide death toll to 16, officials said.

David Hogue, a spokesman for Faulkner County, said his understanding was "the child was born and took a breath and died." The exact time of death wasn't clear.

In a statement, Hogue said the death of the infant "has been attributed to the tornado" on the basis of the mother's injuries. The extent of those injuries wasn't clear, Hogue said, noting that they were suffered while she was pregnant with the child.

A message left seeking additional information from Faulkner County Coroner Patrick Moore wasn't immediately returned Monday.

Twelve people now have died in the April 27 tornado in Faulkner County in addition to three in Pulaski County and one in White County.
