Oh no, there goes Tokyo

By The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Sixty years ago, American nuclear tests in the South Pacific irradiated a dinosaur that had somehow managed to survive extinction. This made him angry. Over the past decades, the King of Monsters has morphed from a terrifying metaphor of nuclear destruction to a cuddly, Barney-like mascot and kitsch item. But judging from the trailers, Godzilla’s got his attitude back.

But is this new Hollywood Godzilla a worthy reiteration? Our Piers Marchant reviews this new film in this week’s MovieStyle. And speaking of cultural icons testing the cinematic waters this week, Marchant also assays Jon (Don Draper) Hamm’s Disneyfied sports film Million Dollar Arm.

Meanwhile MovieStyle editor Philip Martin reviews Hamm’s Mad Men co-star John Slattery’s directorial debut God’s Pocket (which stars the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Richard Shepard’s take on British crime noirs, Dom Hemingway. Dan Lybarger chips in by interviewing Shepard; and as always, Karen Martin handles new DVD releases in her Home Movies column.
