Gun discharges in Memphis movie theater; man held

George Gholson.

MEMPHIS — Police say no one was hurt when a loaded gun fell out of a man's pants pocket in a movie theater and fired.

Memphis police said 63-year-old George Gholson was arrested and charged Tuesday with reckless endangerment and failing to follow a posted "no-weapons" notice.

Police said Gholson took a .38-caliber, two-shot Derringer into a movie theater in east Memphis. The gun, which was loaded with one bullet, fell out of his pants pocket and fired the round.

Police said none of the 18 people in the theater was hit. An off-duty police officer who was in the theater at the time took Gholson into custody.

The theater had posted a notice prohibiting weapons inside the building. Online court records do not show whether Gholson has a lawyer.

If he had a CCP he should loose it forever. Probably some Saturday night special with hammer resting on the firing pin. He should be charged and fined.

So Reason, please tell me what new, additional gun law would have prevented this from happening? I'm fairly certain he was carrying a gun without a concealed carry permit (against the law) and he had a gun in an establishment where guns are not permitted (against the law). Tell me again, what law would have prevented this?

I dont know what the laws are in TN. but here in arkansas we can not carry a weapon in theaters regardless of posting, that goes for malls also. You of course have the choice of disregarding the law, and carrying anyway but if something like this happens, I agree that he should be fined and IF he was a ccl he should have it stripped permantly. If you can not control your weapon better than that you do not need to have a weapon. There are accidents, then there is just plain stupidity.

For jburkett: Please quote the source of information for your comment, "I dont know what the laws are in TN. but here in arkansas we can not carry a weapon in theaters regardless of posting, that goes for malls also." To my knowledge, the only restriction against carrying a concealed handgun in either of the aforementioned places is a restriction required to be placed by the owners, or controlling entity, that the 'carrying of a handgun is prohibited'.
