Ex-LR pupil, 13, engineers a win

Way to clean oil spills earns her kudos at White House

WASHINGTON -- Former Little Rock student Chythanya Murali, 13, won first place in engineering at a national science and engineering competition Tuesday for creating a new way to clean oil spills.

Earlier Tuesday, President Barack Obama congratulated the 30 middle school finalists of the 2014 Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) competition at the White House.

Chythanya said she shook the president's hand.

Chythanya was a student at LISA Academy charter school when she qualified for the competition. Her family moved over the summer, and she now attends Centennial High School in Maryland.

Her project involves biological agents that, when mixed, clean up the oil. She said she was inspired by the BP oil spill that affected the Gulf Coast in 2010.

"It was kind of devastating," she said.

First-place winners received an iPad and $3,500 to attend a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) summer camp.

Chythanya also qualified for the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the past two years.
