Wintry precipitation still possible through weekend

More wintry precipitation is expected this weekend, mainly in the northern half of the state, forecasters say.

John Robinson, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Little Rock, released an updated timeline for the anticipated forecast in an email Thursday.

Starting Saturday afternoon, Robinson said, a mixture of light rain and snow is expected in Northwest Arkansas, with a greater chance of light snow than rain at higher elevations. The mixture of rain and snow will move into the north central and northeast sections of the state Saturday night, while gradually decreasing in the northwest. As the night progresses, the precipitation will likely transition to light snow, according to Robinson.

Sunday, the mixture of light rain and snow will continue across the northern half of the state, then in the afternoon transition to mostly snow in the northwest and across much of the north at night. Southern Arkansas counties will likely see a a mixture of light rain, sleet and snow throughout the day.

While some accumulations may occur, Robinson said, “most if not all of the wintry precipitation should exit Arkansas by sunrise on Monday."
