Light wintry weather, lower temperatures expected through weekend

A cold weather system could bring lower temperatures and light wintry weather into the state this weekend, forecasters say.
A cold weather system could bring lower temperatures and light wintry weather into the state this weekend, forecasters say.

Though accumulation is expected to be light, wintry precipitation is possible throughout the weekend, mostly in the northwestern part of the state, forecasters say.

Emilie Nipper, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Little Rock, said a weak cold weather system will move into far Northwest Arkansas on Saturday morning, delivering a mix of snow and sleet with it.

The wintry precipitation will change over to a cold rain in the afternoon, Nipper said.

Saturday night into Sunday, as another system brings lower temperatures into the rest of the state, forecasters are predicting a wintry mix as far south as Mena, Conway and Jonesboro.

“It’s still very slight chances — it’s not really going to amount to much,” Nipper said.

The main concern for meteorologists is Sunday night into Monday morning, she said.

“The snow and winter precipitation chances reach as far south as De Queen to Arkadelphia to West Helena [Sunday night into Monday], but the amounts are going to be light,” she said.

The largest expected accumulation is about a half-inch in the northwest, and about a tenth of an inch in other areas, she said.
