Two men shot in attempted robbery

Two men were shot Tuesday night after attempting to buy a vehicle they had found on Craigslist, police say.

Little Rock police responded to CHI St. Vincent, where they spoke to Christopher Whitaker, 36, of Little Rock, who said he had been looking at a vehicle on Craigslist and called the potential seller about 11 a.m. Tuesday to set up an appointment, a Little Rock Police Department report states.

Whitaker and Bradley Rotenberry, 36, of Mabelvale, drove to 5205 Halifax Drive about 6:30 p.m., where they made contact on the street with the purported seller, described as a 18- to 23-year-old black man, according to the report.

The Craiglist seller told the two men that the 2003 blue BMW 745 was being test-driven by another potential buyer and that they had to wait for the car to return, according to the report.

Whitaker said after “what seemed like a long time,” the man handed him papers for the vehicle, and he was concealing a small, semi-automatic handgun, according to police.

The man then pointed the gun at Rotenberry and said, “Give me the money,” the report states.

Rotenberry refused, and the man shot him in the right leg, police said. Rotenberry told police that he started to run and heard the gun “click.”

Whitaker then grabbed the purported car seller and tried to pin him down, but the man shot him and fled the scene, according to the report.

Neither of the men’s wounds was thought to be life-threatening, the report states.

Police say the man Whitaker and Rotenberry met was last seen wearing a dark knit cap, a Nike jogging suit and black Nike Air Jordan shoes.
