CONWAY -- An injunction curtailing violence by either the Virco Manufacturing Corp. or its striking employees will be issued here, Chancellor Richard Mobley said Wednesday. A suit was filed Sept. 18 by Virco to prohibit picketing by members of the United Steelworkers Union. Virco said its present employees were being subjected to vituperations, harassment and physical abuse, and asked that the striking union be required to post a bond of no less than $50,000 which would be forfeited if the injunction was violated. A counter suit was filed Friday by the union seeking an injunction to halt violence and other unlawful practices by the firm.

• Economic development, improved quality of life and public safety emerged as key issues Thursday in the only contested race for a spot on Little Rock's Board of Directors. Joan Adcock, Bill Rector and Kevin Dedner disagreed on some topics but kept things polite during their portion of a candidates' forum, sponsored by Comcast Cable. Adcock has served as an at-large city director for the past 12 years and operates a welfare-to-work program. Rector, a member of Little Rock's Planning Commission, is the owner and publisher of the Daily Record. Dedner is the governmental relations director for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. The forum, moderated by Carol Young of the League of Women Voters, featured a handful of questions from community activists.
