Springdale elementary school's garden lauded

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Agriculture Department has recognized a Springdale elementary school as having the best school garden in the state.

The department and lending company Farm Credit announced the winners of the Arkansas Grown School Garden of the Year contest on Tuesday. The winners were chosen from all grade schools that operated a garden during the 2013-2014 school year.

Harp Elementary took the top spot and was awarded $1,500. Asbell Elementary in Fayetteville, Magnet Cove High School in Malvern and North Little Rock High School-Freshman campus were also recognized. They each earned $500.

Arkansas's Secretary of Agriculture says the gardens are "crucial" for educating students about the benefits of fresh produce.
