Arkansas company gets grant for compostable bag

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A company affiliated with the University of Arkansas that makes a compostable bag as a substitute for plastic bags has been awarded a $741,221 grant by The National Science Foundation.

The grant to cycleWood Solutions announced Monday will help the company accelerate the commercialization of the Xylobag. Company officials say Ozark Natural Foods in Fayetteville is stocking the bags and that there are commitments from two undisclosed retail chains to stock the bags.

The Xylobag is made from lignen — which is a byproduct from paper mills and biofuel plants. The bag has been certified as compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute and breaks down in about 12 weeks in a commercial composting facility.

The company has an office at the Arkansas Research and Technology Park in Fayetteville.
