Driver killed when vehicle hits dirt bank, overturns

A 37-year-old Batesville man was killed Tuesday when the vehicle he was driving ran off the road and overturned, ejecting him, authorities said.

It happened about 6 p.m. on Arkansas 14 east of Rosie in Independence County, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Police say Clarence Holland was driving a 2009 Pontiac east on the highway when the vehicle went left of center and into a ditch. It then hit a dirt bank and overturned, ejecting Holland, the report said.

Holland died from unspecified injuries. A 20-year-old passenger was taken to White River Medical Center in Batesville. The extent of her injuries wasn't clear.

The report didn't indicate what may have caused the crash. Conditions at the time were described as clear and dry.

The death was the 346th in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
