Stephen Cefalo

Where I live: I live in the Indian Hills neighborhood of North Little Rock with my wife, Amy, and our children, Vivienne, 16, Aslan, 13, Guinevere, 12, Livia, 10, Crusoe, 8, and Ivy Wyn, 6. We also have a large dog named Jacksie. We love the house, which was well built and has been well loved. And we love our neighborhood.

Occupation: Artist; instructor at the Arkansas Arts Center and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock; creative director of Studio Argenta School of Figurative Arts.

My favorite space is: My home studio.

Why? I've always wanted a northern-lit studio space with skylights. It is a peaceful room, which overlooks a lovely flower garden that is always producing something I haven't seen before. It is the perfect place to meet portrait clients, give painting lessons, or just sip coffee and think up crazy ideas for paintings. It is soothing at night to leave the doors open, feel the breeze, and paint to the sound of crickets. My studio was originally built to house the previous owner's collection of birds. Sections of the backyard are over the Sherwood city limits, which is great for being able to say, "I'm going out of town."

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Give the studio higher ceilings. A painter always wants higher ceilings.
