VIDEO: Entergy implodes 50-year-old generating unit

Entergy Arkansas imploded a 50-year-old generating unit near Helena on Friday, officials say.

The Ritchie Plant, which has not been in service since 2013, was destroyed about 8 a.m. It was capable of producing 918 megawatts of electricity.

The demolition is expected to be complete in 2015, when a second unit will be imploded, a company news release states. The company is returning the site to a green field for future development projects.

Entergy Arkansas services about 700,000 customers in 63 counties, according to the release.
