ALL RED REVIVAL

1 game, many parties

Hogball unites diverse peoples in common cause on hallowed ground

It had all the sensory signature of a tailgate party on Markham Street -- the smell of grilling meats and beer breath, the sound of voices rising over the din of competing stereos, the sight of all-American flag skirts and orange cones directing traffic. And, of course, the red sea.

On the occasion of the University of Arkansas Razorbacks welcoming the University of Georgia Bulldogs football team, however, one had to actively seek the blazing boar or "forward-looking" G -- who came up with that? -- for affiliation. Windstream CEO Jeff and Christine Gardner, for instance, might be expected to pull for the home team, but look closely.

It was a day of nuptial potential (Bekah, did you accept your skywritten marriage proposal?), of reunions (the Class of 1984 Mount St. Mary girls split an enormous tailgating tent with their same-year counterparts from Catholic High School for Boys), and of election-year gamesmanship (Asa Hutchinson narrowly defeated Mike Ross, 316 political signs to 295).

Ahh, but the day was beautiful, the crush of fans impressive, and the game close ... kind of. Our beloved team fell two touchdowns short to the top-10 Bulldogs.
