Girl, 12, hit by SUV after exiting school bus, dies

Seventh-grader Jazmin Hernandez had just stepped off the school bus and was crossing U.S. 70 in Pike County when she was hit by a Ford Explorer on Monday afternoon.

Jazmin, 12, was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital, but died Tuesday.

According to a preliminary fatal crash summary posted by the Arkansas State Police, the eastbound bus had stopped at 1932 U.S. 70 to let students off. All of its emergency lights and signals were flashing.

The Explorer, headed west, failed to yield, the summary states.

Typically, state police reports include the identities of all drivers and passengers in crash summaries involving fatalities.

The preliminary summary in this case, however, doesn't disclose who was driving the Ford Explorer or whether there were passengers in the vehicle.

State police spokesman Bill Sadler said Tuesday that the driver's name is being withheld while the trooper finishes interviewing witnesses. The name will continue to be withheld until a prosecutor reviews the case and decides whether to file criminal charges, Sadler added.

"There is a criminal investigation underway ... This individual is not in custody. It would be inappropriate to identify him," Sadler said.

Prosecuting Attorney Bryan Chesshir wasn't reached for comment Monday at his office.

Jazmin was struck by the Ford Explorer at 3:25 p.m. Monday.

By Tuesday afternoon, dozens of residents in Kirby and Glenwood -- where the Hernandez family lives -- had made Jazmin's school portrait their Facebook profile picture.

The Kirby School District, where Jazmin was a student, canceled all games scheduled for Tuesday night.

Superintendent Jeff Alexander said school counselors from other districts spent the day at a Kirby school with students and teachers. Local counseling agencies also sent in staff members, he added.

On Tuesday afternoon, teachers and parent volunteers rode on school buses with students, Alexander said.

"We just wanted to give them a little bit of extra security today."

He added: "Our hearts and prayers go out to the Hernandez family. They're the ones truly suffering."
