Dining for Dictionaries

CONWAY — Dining for Dictionaries, sponsored by the Conway Morning Rotary, will hold a pancake-breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Stoby’s Restaurant, 805 Donaghey Ave., to help the service organization provide new dictionaries to Conway, Vilonia and Mayflower third-graders. Laura Taylor, event chairwoman, said that with the addition of two schools affected by the April tornado, the dictionary project will reach more than 1,000 students. Tickets for the breakfast are $5 and may be purchased from any Conway Morning Rotarian or at Stoby’s the morning of the event. Children younger than 5 may eat free. People may dine in or carry out.

St. Elizabeth Bazaar, Spaghetti Dinner

OPPELO — St. Elizabeth Church on Arkansas 154 in Oppelo, near the foot of Petit Jean Mountain, will hold a bazaar and spaghetti dinner today. The bazaar is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include bingo, a silent auction, a bake sale and a kiddie land, complete with a bounce house. The spaghetti dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature homemade spaghetti with Petit Jean sausage, homemade bread and salad. Tickets are $13 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children 5 and younger may eat free when accompanied by an adult.

Conway AARP Meeting

CONWAY — The Conway AARP Chapter will have its monthly meeting at 10:45 a.m. in the Conway First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, next to the parking lot on the north side of the church, 1610 Prince St. There will be a potluck lunch, followed by bingo. Attendees are asked to bring a bingo prize and a canned good for the church food pantry. Volunteers are needed at 10:25 a.m. to set up tables and chairs. The meeting will adjourn at 12:45 p.m. All seniors are welcome to attend.

Registration Deadline

CONWAY — Tuesday is the deadline to register for the 13th annual Prostate Cancer Screening at Conway Regional Medical Center. The free screening will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 22. A group of Conway physicians and Conway Regional staff and volunteers will conduct the screening, along with staff from the Arkansas Prostate Cancer Foundation. An appointment is required and can be made by calling (501) 513-5858.

Meet the Candidates Fish Fry

PERRYVILLE — Perry County residents are invited to meet the candidates and enjoy a free fish fry, as long as the food holds out, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Perryville United Methodist Church Connection Center. Every candidate at every level who will be on the Perry County ballot in November has been invited. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet many of the candidates and have one-to-one discussions. There will be no speeches.

Van Buren County Retired Teachers Meeting

CLINTON — The Van Buren County Retired Teachers Association will meet at 11:30 a.m. at Western Sizzlin. Lisa Bamburg, an associate in the Hughes & Associates Insurance Agency, will be the guest speaker. The Hughes firm has the exclusive endorsement of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association as it relates to member benefits. Bamburg will inform retirees of ways to save money when purchasing health insurance and a Medicare drug plan. Other areas of interest will include long-term-care insurance and dental insurance. All retired school employees and the public are encouraged to attend.

Quarterly Luncheon

HEBER SPRINGS — The Heber Springs Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its quarterly luncheon at noon at the Heber Springs Community Center. Julie Murray, the new chamber director, will be the guest speaker and present Leadership Heber Springs. This is a new program sponsored by the chamber and ASU-Heber Springs that will focus on developing and educating the future leaders of the Heber Springs area.
