HSU QB closing in on passing record

Henderson State senior Kevin Rodgers is set to break the state’s career passing yardage mark for college quarterbacks tonight in the Reddies’ Great American Conference game against Southeastern Oklahoma State at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium in Arkadelphia.

Rodgers needs 106 passing yards to break the record of 10,758 set by Arkansas State’s Ryan Aplin from 2009-2012.

Rodgers, a senior from Rockwall, Texas, has 10,653 heading into tonight’s game, which will be aired on CBS Sports Network. He also needs two touchdown passes to tie the state’s college record of 100 set by the University of Central Arkansas’ Nathan Brown from 2005-2008.

The Reddies quarterback threw for 169 yards last week in a 27-10 victory over Nicholls State, an NCAA Division I FCS member. It marked the fewest passing yards he’d thrown for since throwing for 158 yards against McKendree in the 2011 season, a span of 26 games.

Rodgers has completed 50 of 71 (70 percent) of his passes this season and is averaging 288.5 passing yards per game.

HSU also has another player on the brink of setting a state record. Senior wide receiver Darius Davis needs only two touchdown catches to tie the state’s college record of 36 set by Southern Arkansas’ Nik Lewis in 2001-2003.
