• Chief of Police Campbell yesterday issued an order to all vagrants who make their home in Argenta to find work or leave town. "I will give the 'vags' a reasonable time in which to find work," said Chief Campbell. "After that time is up out they go."

HOT SPRINGS -- Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey made his first bid for Arkansas votes to the tune of "Dixie" at the Hot Springs airport Thursday night. The Democratic vice presidential nominee was greeted by about 500 persons on his first visit to Arkansas. The Minnesota senator, coming to Arkansas from a day of whirlwind campaigning in Texas, said he was proud to be in a state which, like Georgia, has always voted the Democratic ticket.

• The traffic jam created by worshipers trying to get to and from the Billy Graham Crusade services Sunday had people going through hell to get to a little piece of heaven. And while everybody agreed traffic around War Memorial Stadium was bad, people disagreed on just how bad it was. "It's terrible," a Little Rock police officer who asked not to be identified said as he was directing traffic. "We're understaffed because they don't want to pay overtime." "It went fairly smooth," police Lt. W.W. Williams said. "We've not had one accident, not one incident and not one arrest. If this was a Razorback (football) game we would have had several of all of those by now."

• A Pulaski County Circuit Court judge said Friday he would decide by Monday whether to grant a state Democratic Party request that he order that Ralph Nader's name be stricken from Arkansas' November presidential ballot. Judge Timothy Fox heard testimony from witnesses and debate between lawyers during a three-hour proceeding over whether Nader's campaign violated state law in gathering signatures on a petition that resulted in his name being placed on the ballot. In the coming election, Nader is widely expected to pull votes away from Democratic candidate John Kerry, a U.S. senator from Massachusetts, in the race with President Bush, a Republican. Three other third-party candidates also have been certified for the Arkansas presidential ballot.
