S'Wonderful, string quartet, Jazz Mass fill festival weekend

The Hot Springs Jazz Festival continues this weekend with events in various venues today through Sunday.

Today Shirley Chauvin's S'Wonderful, described as a "little big band," will perform at 6 p.m. at the Quapaw Baths & Spa, 417 Central Ave.

Admission is $10 for members of the Hot Springs Jazz Society, $15 for nonmembers.

Friday, the festival will feature the Quapaw String Quartet and the ATM Jazz Band with Ray Blue on saxophone and Tyler Stephenson on vocals at 7 p.m. at the Five Star Theater, 710 Central Ave.

Admission is $30 for members, $35 for nonmembers.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, the festival will present Jazz in the Streets, which will feature the festival's first "Dancing in the Streets" at 4 p.m. The free street event under the sky bridge at Market Street and Broadway will open with Dizzy 7 at 11 a.m., followed by The Tri-Tones at noon, The Arkansas Jazz Orchestra at 1 p.m., ATM with Ray Blue at 2 p.m., the University of Arkansas at Monticello Jazz Band at 3 p.m. and "Dancing in the Streets," featuring TwiceSax, at 4 p.m.

Sunday, a Jazz Mass featuring the music of Horace Silver, who recently died, will be held at 10:45 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 228 Spring St. For more information, call (501) 623-1653. Performing musicians will be Bill Huntington on bass, Matt Dickson on saxophone, Chris Parker on piano, Jay Payette on drums, Shelley Martin on flute and Charlie Wilson on clarinet.

Big Head Todd & The Monsters will perform at 9 p.m. Saturday at Juanita's.

Formed in 1986 in Colorado by Todd Park Mohr and two other musicians who attended Columbine High School together, the group released a debut album, Another Mayberry, in 1989. The band's 1993 album, Sister Sweetly, went platinum for sales of more than a million copies. The group's 14th album, Black Beehive, came out on Feb. 4.

Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 the day of the show.

Sunday, the club will feature Aaron Behrens & The Midnight Stroll at 8 p.m.

Behrens is the lead singer of Ghostland Observatory, but considers The Midnight Stroll his current "form of musical expression."

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 the day of the show.

R2B2 will headline Friday at the White Water Tavern.

The See will open the 10 p.m. show.

R2B2, a Denton, Texas, duo, performs a wide range of sounds, from ambient soundscapes to soul, roots rock and abstract progressive rock.

Admission is $7.

Saturday, the club will feature Jeff Coleman & The Feeders.

Admission is $5 for the 9:30 p.m. show.

Leopold & His Fiction will perform at Stickyz Rock 'n' Roll Chicken Shack at 9 p.m. Friday.

Leopold & His Fiction, originally from Detroit, are now based in Austin, Texas. The band has toured with Shooter Jennings, ZZ Top, Deer Tick, Gary Clark, Jr. and Reverend Payton.

Admission is $7.

Blues rock guitarist/singer Anthony Gomes will headline at the club Saturday, and local rockers Steve Hester & DeJa VooDoo will open the show at 9 p.m.

Gomes, a Canadian who now lives in St. Louis, released his debut album, Blues in Technicolor, in 1998 and has since released 10 more albums, the latest of which, ... Before the Beginning, came out in 2013.

Tickets are $12 advance, $15 the day of the show.

Sunday, the club will feature Black Taxi at 8 p.m.

Admission is $5.

Black Taxi, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., is a dance/punk group, which has drawn comparisons to The Talking Heads, Cake and Daft Punk.

Muck Sticky will headline Friday's show at the Rev Room, with Taco & Da Mofos opening at 9 p.m.

Admission is $10.

Muck Sticky, a native of Memphis who was born Justin Osburn, got his music industry start working in tour merchandising for the band Saliva. He has since released 13 albums under various names, including Mervous Thrifty, Sticky Muck and Muck Sticky. In June 2013, he marked his 4,000th day wearing pajama pants as his normal attire. (That's almost 11 years.)

Cherub will perform Saturday, with Ghost Beach and Gibbz opening the 9 p.m. show.

Cherub is a Nashville, Tenn., electro-pop duo consisting of Jason Huber and Jordan Kelley. The two men began their musical partnership in 2010 and after several singles and EP recordings, Columbia Records released their debut full-length album, Year of the Caprese, powered by the song "Doses and Mimosas" in May.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door.

Maxine's in Hot Springs will present local improvisational comedy troupe Cult Fiction at 9 p.m. Friday.

Admission is free.

Saturday, the club will present three bands: Hooten Hallers, a hillbilly blues group from Missouri, plus two Arkansas acts -- Natural State Band, a blues rock outfit, and indie folk singer AmyJo Savannah.

Admission is $5.
