Henderson State remains at No. 7

Henderson State remains at No. 7 in the American Football Coaches Association Division II coaches poll released Monday. The Reddies (3-0), who beat Southeastern Oklahoma State 60-17 last Thursday, receiving 582 points in the poll, behind Northwest Missouri State, Colorado State-Pueblo, Minnesota State-Mankato, Minnesota-Duluth, North Alabama and Lenoir-Rhyne.

Henderson State plays at East Central (Okla.) on Saturday

Harding (2-0) was off last week, but moved up four spots to No. 16 and will play at Southern Nazarene on Saturday. Ouachita Baptist (2-0) received five votes.

GAC announces players of the week

Henderson State quarterback Kevin Rogers and Ouachita Baptist running back Steven Kehner were named co-offensive players of the week by the Great American Conference, while OBU’s Zack Mitchell was named defensive player of the week and Arkansas Tech’s Michael Perry was named special teams player of the week, the conference announced Monday.

Rodgers threw for 382 yards and two touchdowns in a 60-17 victory against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Kehner ran for 160 yards on 38 carries and scored 4 touchdowns and Mitchell intercepted three passes and had four tackles in a 41-20 victory against East Central (Okla.). Perry returned the second-half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and had 21 yards on punt returns in a 34-14 victory over Southern Nazarene.

BASKETBALL

ASU adds transfer

Arkansas State announced Daijon Macklien has joined the men’s team after transferring from Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) Community College and will be eligible to play this season.

“He’s a late addition to our team and will provide immediate ball handling, play making, scoring and defensive ability to our team,” Arkansas State Coach John Brady said

Macklien, 6-1, 195 pounds, earned All-Alabama Community College Conference South Division second-team recognition last season after averaging 12.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game with 5.5 assists and 1.0 steals for the Pirates, who went 19-13.

VOLLEYBALL

UALR honored by Sun Belt

UALR senior outside hitter Edina Begic was named the Sun Belt Conference’s offensive player of the week for the 10th time in her career Monday.

Begic recorded at least 10 kills and 10 digs for the 49th time in her career in a victory Wednesday over Louisiana-Monroe. She had 15 kills and 10 digs. On Saturday, she had 19 kills in a victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.

ASU duo wins Sun Belt honor

Arkansas State freshman Drew Jones won her second Sun Belt Conference freshman of the week award, while Markie Schaedig was named defensive player of the week honors.

Jones led the Red Wolves with 17 kills, 3 blocks and 2 digs in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Georgia Southern. Schaedig had 45 digs during two matches, including 16 against Texas State and 29 against Georgia Southern. She also had three aces against Georgia Southern.

GOLF

UALR women second

UALR women are in second place, three strokes back of host Louisiana-Monroe, at the Fred Marx Invitational in Monroe, La., with a 36-hole score of 610. The first two rounds were played Monday and the final round is today.

UALR’s Sofie Kvarnstrom shot a 5-over-par 149 through the first two rounds and is tied for second, five shots behind Sam Houston State’s Paige Nelson.

UALR’s Stina Resen is tied for fifth with a 7-over 151.

CROSS COUNTRY

UA men, women lead regional rankings

Arkansas’ men and women are ranked first in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association’s regional rankings.

Arkansas’ men leads the South Central rankings after winning the Iona Meet of Champions in Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday. It marks the 10th consecutive poll that Arkansas has been ranked No. 1.

Arkansas’ women won the Missouri Southern Stampede on Saturday in Joplin, Mo., marking the 15th consecutive poll Arkansas has been ranked No. 1.

In addition, Arkansas’ Dominque Scott was named NCAA Division I national athlete of the week by the USTFCCA after winning the Missouri Southern Stampede with a career-best time of 16 minutes, 32.78 seconds.
