Final jazz series show is today with Bennie Wallace Quartet

The Bennie Wallace Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. today at South on Main.

Admission is $30 for reserved seating or $20 for general admission.

Wallace, a tenor saxophonist, was described by Downbeat magazine in 1999 as "a modernist who understands the past."

He will be joined by longtime collaborator Herlin Riley on drums. He is a native of New Orleans and has performed with Ahmad Jamal and Wynton Marsalis. Bassist Bill Huntington and pianist Chris Parker are the other quartet members and live in Little Rock and North Little Rock, respectively.

The show is the final one in the 2014-15 jazz series sponsored by Oxford American and the University of Central Arkansas College of Fine Arts and Communication.

The Trophy Boyfriends, along with opening acts Glittercore and Glowing Life, will perform at 9 p.m. today at the White Water Tavern. Admission is $6.

Of the trio of bands, Glowing Life is the newest. The Little Rock group, formed by Chad Conder and Mitch Vanhoose, originally was known as Cosby.

Devon Allman, plus opening act Steve Hester & Deja Voodoo, will perform at the Rev Room at 8 p.m. today. Admission is $15 for general admission, $25 for reserved seating.

Allman, 42, is the son of Gregg Allman and Shelley Kay Jefts, who divorced when Devon was an infant. He did not meet his famous father until he was a teenager, but the father and son readily connected. Growing up in St. Louis, Devon eventually embraced the blues-rock styles he had inherited.

He has been a member of the bands Honeytribe and Royal Southern Brotherhood and has recorded solo. His latest album, a solo project, Ragged & Dirty, came out in 2014.

The Thunder on the Mountain Throwdown, starting at 8 p.m. Friday, will feature Alan Hunt, Cons of Formant, The Shotgun Billies and Big Shane Thornton. Admission is $5.

The bands will compete to win a spot at the Thunder on the Mountain country music festival, June 26-28, on Mulberry Mountain, north of Ozark.

Tragikly White will perform at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10.

Hancock, known for his songs "Neon Signs and Thunderstorms" and "Driving My Young Life Away," is on the mend after a motorcycle accident nearly a year ago (April 27) in which he suffered a collapsed lung and fractured elbow.
