Springer's catch, Conger's blast catapult Astros

ASTROS 6, RANGERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Hank Conger hit a two-run home run in the 14th inning following George Springer's game-saving catch in the 10th, and the Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Sunday.

Conger homered after Evan Gattis reached base for the first time this season -- on a walk in his 21st plate appearance of the year.

Will Harris (1-0) retired six consecutive batters. He struck out the side in the 12th, his 19th consecutive scoreless outing dating to August.

Samuel Deduno loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 14th but got his first big league victory when Rougned Odor lined out to right field.

Deduno got two quick outs before allowing Prince Fielder's third single, a walk and Houston's fourth hit batter -- and the second to Mitch Moreland. Plate umpire Laz Diaz ruled Moreland wasn't hit, but the call was overturned by video review.

Springer kept Houston alive in the 10th with a leaping catch at the wall in right on a ball hit by Leonys Martin.

Martin had a two-run single in the seventh to stop an 0-for-18 skid and end former Arkansas Razorbacks pitcher Dallas Keuchel's season-opening scoreless streak at 13 2/3 innings.

TIGERS 8, INDIANS 5 Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs and drove in four runs as visiting Detroit improved to 6-0 for the first time in 30 years. Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the first off T.J. House (0-1), and J.D. Martinez added a solo shot in the ninth.

BLUE JAYS 10, ORIOLES 7 Jose Bautista hit the last of Toronto's three home runs, a two-run drive in the eighth off Darren O'Day to lead the visiting Blue Jays. Dalton Pompey and Kevin Pillar also connected for the Blue Jays, who doubled their home-run total for the season. Toronto scored 23 runs in the three-game series.

WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 2 Chris Sale (1-0) struck out 8 over 6 innings in his return from a broken bone in his right foot, allowing 1 run and 5 hits. Adam LaRoche homered for the second consecutive day and had a run-scoring single for host Chicago.

ROYALS 9, ANGELS 2 Alcides Escobar and Alex Rios hit two-run doubles, Salvador Perez hit a home run, and visiting Kansas City improved to 6-0. The winning streak is the Royals' second longest to open a season after a 9-0 start in 2003.

MARINERS 8, ATHLETICS 7 Nelson Cruz hit a home run for the second consecutive day, hitting a solo drive off Tyler Clippard (0-1) in the 10th inning. Mariners ace Felix Hernandez left after five innings as a precaution because of tightness in his right quadriceps. Seattle took a 7-3 lead into the ninth before host Oakland rallied to tie it against closer Fernando Rodney (1-0).

NATIONAL LEAGUE

PIRATES 10, BREWERS 2 Andrew McCutchen hit a home run and drove in four runs in his return to Pittsburgh's lineup, and Neil Walker hit a three-run shot for the visiting Pirates. McCutchen took himself out of Friday night's game because of soreness in his left knee and didn't play Saturday.

CARDINALS 7, REDS 5 Matt Carpenter hit a two-run home run off Kevin Gregg (0-1) in the 11th inning to lift the visiting Cardinals. Carlos Villanueva (1-0) pitched two innings, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th by striking out Todd Frazier.

NATIONALS 4, PHILLIES 3 Wilson Ramos drove in the decisive run in the 10th with his second RBI of the day. Bryce Harper hit a home run and former Northwest Arkansas Natural Clint Robinson had three hits for the visiting Nationals, who salvaged a victory in the three-game series.

METS 4, BRAVES 3 Bartolo Colon helped himself with his first RBI in a decade, and Daniel Murphy hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the eighth, dropping the host Braves to 5-1. Backed by Michael Cuddyer's two-run homer in the first inning, Colon led 3-2 before Jonny Gomes' seventh-inning homer just inside the left-field pole.

CUBS 6, ROCKIES 5 Former Rockies player Dexter Fowler hit a two-run home run on a hanging slider from LaTroy Hawkins (1-1) on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth inning for visiting Chicago. Neil Ramirez (1-0) earned the victory by getting two outs in the eighth.

PADRES 6, GIANTS 4 Backup catcher Wil Nieves hit his first career grand slam, a drive off former San Diego star Jake Peavy, and the host Padres won three of four in their series against the defending World Series champions.

DODGERS 7, DIAMONDBACKS 4 Alex Guerrero had his first big league home run, went 3 for 5 and four RBI to back Zack Greinke (1-0), who allowed five hits in seven scoreless innings.
