2 more on list of hopefuls seeking college's top job

HELENA-WEST HELENA -- Two more applications are in for Phillips Community College's chancellorship, raising the number of hopefuls to 27.

All applicants are vying for the chancellor's position at the 1,797-student college, which is a part of the University of Arkansas System. The college has campuses in Helena-West Helena, DeWitt and Stuttgart.

The new candidates, according to the UA System, are:

• Wayne Ezelle of Marrero, La., professor of business at Trident University in Cypress, Calif., and Touro University in Los Alamitos, Calif.

• Cynthia Griffith of Cypress, Texas, former vice president for instruction at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas.

Friday marked the last day for the search committee to process applications, committee Chairman Rhonda St. Columbia said in an email. Applications received after Friday will be held "in case the committee deems it necessary to review additional candidates," she said.

The 17-member search committee began reviewing applications as they came in. The panel will whittle the list to six to eight candidates, who will interview by phone or Skype this month. The committee will then choose three or four people, who will visit the campuses for a two-day interview period.

The panel wants to give a recommendation to UA System President Donald Bobbitt by May. Later that month, he will submit the recommendation to the system's board of trustees.

The winning candidate will replace Chancellor Steven Murray, 64, who plans to retire June 30. Murray, who has led the college since 2003, earned $163,634 a year.
