Clinton, Huckabee see it as not to be missed

WASHINGTON -- Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Arkansas first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton had the Iowa State Fair on their calendars last week.

Surrounded by hay bales Thursday, Huckabee spoke to the crowd as part of the Des Moines Register's Political Soapbox. Most of the presidential candidates were scheduled to speak during the week-long fair.

Clinton was in New Hampshire on Monday and Tuesday. She was in Iowa at the end of the week, at the Iowa Democratic Wing Ding on Friday and at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Saturday. She was not scheduled to speak at the Political Soapbox event.

Also, last week she was endorsed by the International Association of Machinists and by former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa.

Former Arkansas first lady Janet Huckabee is scheduled to campaign for her husband in South Carolina and Iowa this week.

AUGUST RECESS

U.S. Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., met Wednesday in his Lowell office with Eitan Levon, the consul general of Israel to the southwest. On Thursday, Boozman spoke at Northwest Arkansas Community College's national child protection training center workshop.

On Friday, he was to meet with Circuit Judge Jim Spears in Fort Smith and with Fort Smith Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Claude Legris.

U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., traveled to Japan, Taiwan and South Korea last week to meet with government officials, visit U.S. service members and observe U.S. military operations.

U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford, R-Ark., met Monday with agricultural lenders to discuss the financial health of the agriculture industry, and with pharmacist Krystal Soo and Arkansas Pharmacists Association President Brandon Cooper in Jonesboro. On Tuesday, Barry Colley gave Crawford a tour of the Seven Harvest campus in Forrest City. Seven Harvest is a nonprofit organization that provides hands-on training to local growers. On Tuesday, Crawford met with the consul general of Israel to the southwest. On Thursday, Crawford attended the East Arkansas Good Roads meeting.

On Monday, Bryant Mayor Jill Dabbs hosted an event for U.S. Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., at Speakeasy Coffee Bar in Bryant. The congressman went Tuesday to the Bemis Tree Farm in Little Rock to try his hand at beekeeping. On Wednesday, the Jacksonville and Sherwood chambers of commerce hosted a meet-and-greet for Hill.

Hill's staff and representatives of the Wounded Warrior Project attended the Hiring Our Heroes job fair Wednesday at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds in Little Rock.

On Friday, U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., was in Sebastian County. On Tuesday, he will be in Little Rock for a state Chamber of Commerce event.

EDUCATION GRANT

The U.S. Department of Education announced Friday that the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope-Texarkana received $281,511 as part of $23.4 million in Student Support Services grants to more than 100 institutions in 36 states.

The money goes toward tutoring and mentoring college students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
