SHAKESPEARE AT THE SHELTER

Our House clients, alumni entertain with Shakespeare

After a summer of studying, practice and preparation, Shakespeare at the Shelter was presented by Our House clients and alumni in the shelter's dining hall on Aug. 8. Volunteer scholars, theater experts and staff worked with the performers to present two performances, medleys of Shakespeare's most beloved characters and scenes from some of his favorite writing.

The cast, all working residents or former residents of the homeless shelter who had to juggle rehearsal and their work schedules, received a standing ovation.

Afterward, the players sat on the stage for a question and answer session. Asked what were the best and worst things about living at the shelter, the audience learned that clients enjoyed the camaraderie, the use of the Learning Center and having positive role models. The worst, many agreed, was having a curfew.

Finally, audience and actors gathered in the front hall, where they enjoyed cake and punch.

The cast included Gia Beal, Hastings Bransford, Tom Burns, Derrick Clausen, Leland Goston, Todd Hall , Patricia Mabry, Lenetta Thomas, Joel Williams and Michelle Woodall.

Money raised will help refurbish the shelter's kitchen, which serves 77,000 meals annually.
