World War I focus of history exhibit

A preview of the Arkansas History Commission's exhibit "The Great War: Arkansas in World War I," will be unveiled Aug. 29 at the Patrick Hays Senior Citizens Center at 401 W. Pershing Blvd., the North Little Rock History Commission announced.

The traveling exhibit will be featured during the center's 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. symposium The Great War: Service on All Fronts, co-sponsored by the Arkansas History Commission and the North Little Rock History Commission.

The free exhibit will then formally open Aug. 31 at the North Little Rock Heritage Center at 506 Main St. It will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 9 at the Heritage Center.

The traveling exhibit will showcase original documents, photographs, posters, maps and historical objects from the Arkansas History Commission's inventory that document Arkansas' role during World War I, at home and on the battlefields. Artifacts from the collections of both commissions will be displayed while the exhibit is at the Heritage Center.

The exhibit is funded in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council, the Department of Arkansas Heritage and the National Endowment for the Humanities. More information is available from the Heritage Center at (501) 371-0755.

Pipeline-project contract awarded

North Little Rock Wastewater awarded a $1.42 million contract to Insituform Technologies LLC of Chesterfield, Mo., for a Lakewood Basin pipeline rehabilitation project as part of the utility's effort to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows, a news release from the utility said.

Work is to begin this month, and the contract calls for completion within 180 days. The project is funded through the Arkansas Natural Resources Revolving Fund program.

Residents in the area will be notified ahead of the work with door hangers that request that they minimize water use during the installation process, which normally requires less than a day, according to the news release.

Contract OK'd for Main Street work

The North Little Rock City Council approved a $315,967 contract Monday for an overlay project on Main Street between 13th and 22nd streets, with work likely to start in September.

Redstone Construction Group of Little Rock submitted the lowest of two bids received. Redstone also is completing the street reconstruction on a portion of Main Street that is adjacent to North Little Rock High School at 101 W. 22nd St.

The contract specifies that the new project is to take a maximum of 40 days.

236 apply for 24 firefighters jobs

The North Little Rock Fire Department received 236 applications for a maximum of 24 firefighter positions that will be funded through a $2.6 million federal grant announced July 25.

The number of applicants is the most ever for any vacancies at the Fire Department, city spokesman Nathan Hamilton said.

Each applicant must meet department qualifications; pass a written test, physical agility tests; and complete an interview process.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant is for two years, or three years for any veteran hired. If all 24 positions are filled, that will increase the department's staffing to 175 full-time workers, with the number of firefighters increasing to 81.
