Thorns' plea: Just don't let bedbugs bite

If the Toronto Blue Jays stay on their recent hot streak, there could be a dispute for playing space with the Toronto Argonauts in October.
If the Toronto Blue Jays stay on their recent hot streak, there could be a dispute for playing space with the Toronto Argonauts in October.

The National Women's Soccer League's hotel accommodations for two Portland Thorns players weren't up to their standards.

And these weren't just any other Portland Thorns players.

They were soccer stars Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair, who played this year in the World Cup for the United States and Canada, respectively. Both players took to Twitter to rip the league's hotel accommodations in Kansas City, Mo.

The Thorns stayed at Adam's Mark in Kansas City, and Morgan and Sinclair complained there were bed bugs in the beds at the hotel.

"WARNING to NWSL teams and anyone staying at the Adam's Mark in Kansas City, Mo. #bedbugs #notok," Sinclair tweeted.

Tweeted Morgan: "NWSL, there's no other way to address continuing problems. Hotels have been unacceptable. For ex. [example]: Bed bugs/mold at Adam's Mark Hotel in KC."

The league leaves it up to the home teams to set up accommodations for visiting teams, but the league requires host hotels to have at least a three-star rating. The Adam's Mark met that requirement, but you would have a hard time convincing Morgan and Sinclair.

At least the situation gave Portland's main NWSL rival, the Seattle Reign, a chance to have some fun at the Thorns' expense Monday.

"Guess we're going to have to rethink the new mascot," the Reign's Twitter page said, with a photo of a bug with the slogan "Fate Favors the Mold", a play on the team's slogan "Fortune Favors the Bold."

Portland will host the NWSL championship game, marking the first time the championship game will be played at a neutral site in the league's three-year existence.

Here's hoping for better hotel accommodations in the Rose City.

Homeless?

If the Toronto Blue Jays make the baseball playoffs, it could leave the CFL's Toronto Argonauts without a home for at least three games.

Major League Baseball released its 2015 playoff schedule Monday, and it features three dates that coincide with Argonauts home games. The Blue Jays and Argonauts both play at Rogers Centre.

The Argonauts are scheduled to host the Ottawa Redblacks on Oct. 6. That's also the date for the American League wild-card play-in game.

If the Blue Jays have the home-field advantage in the American League Championship Series, Game 2 on Oct. 17 is the same date as the Argonauts' home game against the Calgary Stampeders while Game 6 will be played Oct. 23, the same day the Argonauts host the Montreal Alouettes.

The Blue Jays have priority when it comes to stadium usage at Rogers Centre. Rescheduling the CFL games are a possibility, but TSN in Canada reported Tuesday the team could use the University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium or Hamilton's Tim Hortons Field for the games.

They said it

• From the satirical sports website sportspickle.com: "Andy Dalton: 'I still believe I can be the worst QB to ever win a Super Bowl.'"

• From Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: "U.S. teen swimmer Katie Ledecky -- who set three world records and won five gold medals at last week's world championships -- is delaying her entry into Stanford until after the 2016 Olympics. Too bad. That 'What I Did This Summer' essay could've been a doozy."

• Arizona Coach Rich Rodriguez, when asked if it was refreshing to have his starting quarterback, Anu Solomon, return to the Wildcats: "Refreshing? I think a nice cold beer or a Bacardi and Coke, or maybe even a nice iced tea sweetened, is refreshing. What was the question again?"
