Downtime, a date good for Rousey

Ronda Rousey is still crushed after losing her UFC women’s bantamweight title to Holly Holm on Nov. 14, but the loss wasn’t going to stop Rousey from keeping a promise.

Marine Lance Cpl. Jarrod Haschert sent a message to the mixed martial arts superstar back in September, asking if she would be his date to the Marine Ball. Countless men have tried, but he was the only person she said “yes” to.

Rousey told TMZ that she wasn’t going to back down from her promise.

“I promised I’d go. It’s an honor to be asked,” she said. “Honestly, I probably would stay on my couch crying and eating ice cream for like another month if he didn’t ask me to go.”

It would have been forgivable if Rousey wanted to stay away from the cameras while she recovers from her loss. It’s rumored Rousey will have her rematch against Holm in July, but until then maybe it’ll be more Netflix and ice cream.

Take a hike

Travis Ford and Oklahoma State did not have a game Thursday night, so the Cowboys coach attended his son’s high school basketball game. Briefly. Ford was apparently thrown out of the game for yelling, “Blow your whistle” at the game’s referees.

Ron Holt, a journalist covering the game, told The Oklahoman that Ford said, “Blow your whistle,” and, “Do your job,” before being escorted out of the gym by Bixby High School Athletic Director Mark Chambers. Brooks Ford, the coach’s son, plays for Stillwater High School.

“There was a possible foul underneath the goal as a Stillwater player went in for a layup,” Holt said, “which caused Stillwater coaches and fans to voice displeasure with the no-call.

“The ref never warned him, he just looked at him and said, ‘You’re gone.’ ”

Ford apologized after speaking with Oklahoma State Athletic Director Mike Holder.

Oops!

Seven members of the Lehigh University football team are facing various charges for breaking into a home while one allegedly assaulted a man in what police described as “retribution” for an alleged attack on a fraternity president.

There was one big problem, however. The players went to the wrong house.

Police on Wednesday charged six members of Lehigh’s football team with felony criminal trespass, saying they broke into an off-campus home in retribution for an alleged attack on a fraternity president, according to the Morning Call in Allentown, Pa.

The two men in the house used a university football roster to help them identify those involved in the Nov. 8 intrusion.

Authorities said university students Samuel Hernandez and Collin Davis told police the men kicked in the doors to their rooms while they slept and Hernandez was punched several times in the face.

The charges levied to the six players Wednesday come after defensive back Brian Githens was charged in November with felony burglary, simple assault and criminal mischief.

Police said Githens “admitted he broke into the home in retribution for an assault of his fraternity president, but admitted he had gone to the wrong home and attacked the wrong person.”

On top of that, one of the other football players is accused of urinating in the victims’ refrigerator.

Quote of the day

“He kind of always made the comment that, ‘You don’t have to worry about me going. You can set the buyout wherever you want it.’ I just believed it, and obviously it didn’t come true.”
