Trucks crash into car, killing two

Two people were killed in Woodruff County Tuesday after a truck rear-ended their car, pushing it into the path of another truck, police said.

The pair, identified as Brenda Dawson, 72, and Jeffery Dawson, 42, both of Newport, were traveling west on U.S. 64 around 1:30 p.m. when their vehicle was struck while turning into a business and was pushed into the eastbound lane, according to an Arkansas State Police report. It collided there with a Peterbilt truck.

Jeffery Dawson, who was in the passenger seat of the 2011 Ford, died at the scene.

Police said the driver, Brenda Dawson, was taken to Regional One Health in Memphis, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the eastbound Peterbilt truck, 64-year-old William Aughenbaugh of Marion, was injured and taken to Cross Ridge Community Hospital in Wynne, according to the report.

Police described road conditions as clear and dry at the time of the accident.

The deaths were the 494th and 495th fatalities on Arkansas roads in 2015, according to preliminary figures.
