MEMPHIS — Prosecutors say a Memphis couple has been charged with chaining their 8-year-old son in his bedroom.

The Shelby County district attorney's office said Melvin Bloomingburg and his wife, Kenya Bloomingburg, have been indicted on two counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of child abuse. Both are free on bond.

They were arrested after their son called police last July and told them he was chained by his ankle to the wall in his bedroom at the home

Investigators say the boy was wearing clothes soaked in urine and he had multiple scars, bruises and signs of malnutrition. Prosecutors say the boy told investigators his father had chained him inside a backyard shed for three days.

Online court records do not show whether the couple has a lawyer.
