Artist's Ascension takes off at Thea Foundation exhibit

Guy Bell unveiled his latest work Ascension at the Thea Foundation presents The Art Department on Feb. 6 in the exhibit "Fourteen Minutes and Fifty-Nine Seconds: A Selection of Recent Works by Guy W. Bell."

He recently had his painting Cain & Abel on view at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville.

Ascension, the stone and metal sculpture, has laser-cut images of buffalo around the base recalling the Lascaux prehistoric cave paintings of wild animals. The top, which floats above the midsection and can rotate, has a realistic human eye, like the Eye of Providence, with a tiny camera that transmits images of the viewers on a screen. Throughout the evening, Bell explained the symbolism and mechanics of the sculpture to guests.

Bell's paintings lined the walls of the gallery.

Attendees also enjoyed a buffet of finger foods by chef Shane Henderson with Ben E. Keith Co. and music by John Willis and the Romantics. Prints of Cain & Abel were sold with 25 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Thea Foundation. The exhibit will be on display through the end of the month.
