1 of 3 wounded held in fatal motel gunfire

A man convicted in a shootout with Little Rock police in 2013 was charged in a shooting Tuesday that left one person dead and three injured, police reported.

Jamie Clayton, 22, was among the three injured in the shooting, which occurred about 5:15 p.m. at Americas Best Value Inn and Suites at 7900 Scott Hamilton Drive. Police found him at UAMS Medical Center about 45 minutes later and arrested him on drug and gun-related charges. Clayton, who had been shot in both legs, purportedly had marijuana and cocaine in his possession.

Calvin Williams, 23, and Kalone McGee, 25, were also hospitalized in the shooting. Police spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said McGee, who was shot in the left leg, was treated and released without charges.

Williams was shot in the chest. His condition was unknown. No charges had been filed against him late Wednesday.

Police identified a man killed in the shooting as Michael Cordell Strickland, 24. He was found lying face down in room 140 of the motel with a gunshot wound in his head.

Davis, without elaborating, said police obtained "statements, evidence and videos" related to the shooting and determined that an argument occurred outside the room. The dispute led several people to open fire.

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots and screaming and saw people running away from the motel, according to a police report. Ketan Bhakta, the motel owner, told police that a black man walked into the front office and said someone had been shot. The man left blood drops on the floor and counter, according to the report.

Investigators recovered about 22 bullet casings in the parking lot and outside the room where Strickland, also known as "Lil Mike," was found dead.

It was unclear who shot whom.

Davis did not return phone calls seeking further information.

Clayton had been on probation after being convicted of second-degree battery and two counts of aggravated assault for opening fire on Little Rock police officers in October 2013. He shot at police from a residence on South Monroe Street, grazing officer Barry Kingston in the right leg. Kingston and another officer returned fire, grazing Clayton in the right foot.

Clayton, also known as "Jamie C," received credit for time served in jail and was sentenced to six years' probation in the case. He was also referred to anger management and drug abuse programs.

Prosecutors on Wednesday filed a petition in court to revoke Clayton's probation.

In his latest arrest, he faces charges of possession of a firearm by certain persons; possession of cocaine with intent to deliver; possession of marijuana; and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.

Clayton was accused of spraying a Little Rock neighborhood with gunfire in December 2013, striking a woman in the foot and fatally injuring a dog. Five vehicles were damaged, including a Central Arkansas Transit Authority bus occupied by three people.

Police said Clayton peppered a four-block area with bullets -- as many as 50, according to witnesses -- in a feud with another man. He was charged with seven counts of committing a terroristic act, but prosecutors dropped the charges against him last November.

Clayton, of 3 Lita Lane in Little Rock, was being held in the Pulaski County jail late Wednesday.
