Weather no issue for setup

Officials expect event will go off as planned

Little Rock Marathon organizers said Tuesday that preparations for the race haven't been fazed by the recent winter weather, and if more comes organizers don't expect it to deter events leading up to the 13th running of the marathon Sunday.

Gina Marchese Pharis, executive director for the marathon, said that equipment for the startling line and finish line and other course necessities were delivered on time to Little Rock on Tuesday morning and that they are planning to begin setup for the course this morning.

About three inches of snow and ice covered central Arkansas on Monday, and more is forecast for later this week.

If forecasts that call for snow today are accurate, Pharis said organizers will adjust by doing more in less time rather than pushing back any events.

"If we get delayed for the weather, then we will start Thursday," Pharis said. "We'll just work longer and harder. We work for the parks department. We can do anything."

A three-day schedule of events associated with the marathon begins Friday with the Health & Fitness Expo at the Statehouse Convention Center, where participants can pick up their marathon packets and passes.

The 5K Fun Run/Walk and the Little Rocker Kids Marathon are still on schedule for Saturday, and Sunday's marathon begins at 8 a.m. at the intersection of East Capitol Avenue and Scott Street.

"There's nothing to be worried about at this point," Pharis said. "If it comes, we'll just jump on it a little harder and faster and get more manpower than we have now."
