Arkansas flu deaths up to 11, officials say

The reported number of flu deaths has increased to 11, the Arkansas Department of Health announced Tuesday.

The department announced Monday that eight people had died of the flu. The additional three deaths didn't necessarily occur over one day, Department of Health Spokesman Kerry Krell said.

The agency releases the death counts as they receive information from death certificates, according to Krell.

The deceased include six people over 65, four people 45 to 64 and one person 25 to 44.

The severity and number of flu cases have increased from this time last year, Krell stated.

The Department of Health documents cases of the flu starting Sept. 28 from one calendar year to the next, then also follows trends of the illness September through around March.

Krell said she expects the season to peak sometime this month.
