An Arkansas lawmaker hopes to see the governor's penmanship on a measure aimed at restoring the lost art to the state's classrooms.
State Rep. Kim Hendren on Monday filed legislation that would require cursive writing be taught in Arkansas' elementary schools. Hendren's proposal would require every public elementary school to teach cursive as a component of English language arts beginning in the 2015-2016 school year.
Several other states have moved to restore cursive instruction after it was dropped from the Common Core educational standards.
Hendren is a Republican from Gravette and the brother-in-law of incoming Gov. Asa Hutchinson. His proposal requires the state Board of Education to adopt rules to enforce the requirement.
